I'm happy to be presenting this full day workshop once again!
This professional development workshop is for artists, photographers and creatives wanting to make more money from their art. Do you love making art, while the business side of your practice gets ignored? Not sure how to secure an exhibition? Overwhelmed by the word ‘marketing’? Then this one day workshop is for you. "Do I need a website and how do I sell my art online? How do I get noticed? How do I talk about what I do?" These questions will be answered in this full day workshop as presenter Hannah Katarski walks you through important aspects of running your art practice as a successful business, so you leave inspired and with an action plan for what to do next. You will learn: • How to talk confidently about what you do as an artist. • Identify and find your audience. • Ways to generate more opportunities for your artistic business. • Social media and eCommerce - what you need and what you don't. The seminar is taking place on Saturday, 18 June and s kindly subsidised by the City of Stirling.

I recently discovered the Room Portrait Club and have joined in with some of the challenges.
Room Portrait Club is a supportive, instagram community where artists complete a weekly portrait challenge using their chosen medium. A new image is posted each Saturday and artists from all over the world share their take on the room's portrait. What I love seeing is the variety of media! There is painting, of course, and sketching, but also collage, printmaking, assemblage and embroidery. It's really inspiring. Some portraits are realistic, whilst others are graphic and some artists choose to reinterpret or just depict a section of the photo. â Here's my room portrait from a few weeks ago. A gorgeous little shepherd's hut interior, complete with William Morris wallpaper!
I've been working on improving my perspective sketching and this image certainly challenged me.
âThe image for the following week didn't inspire me as much, but I loved seeing the work of the other artists.
I LOVE this week's image, because of the colours. I didn't manage to squeeze it in before the deadline, but you can see my version below.
Be sure to check out #roomportraitclub on instagram.
If you are interested in joining in but don't know where to start, check out my online class where we paint a living room portrait with gouache and watercolour for our project. I joined Skillshare as a student about four years ago and I posted my first class - about combining watercolour and gouache - almost 2 years ago! Needless to say I have learned a lot since that first class. I wanted to share a valuable tip with you about using gouache. White is magic!
When I started teaching my first class, I didn't know these tips, but wanted to share them with you. If you are keen to learn more about wonderful gouache and ways to combine it with watercolour, I hope you'll check out my class. Happy New Year!
Workshop dates for the first part of 2021 are now open for bookings. With everything being so uncertain with Covid-19 and restrictions, my last class took place in March 2019. I now have class dates schedules from February to March 2021 covering watercolour journalling, colour mixing, beach themes and boho florals. Check out the classes page for more details and dates. Hope to see you soon! Hey everyone! Have you been daydreaming about holidays you can't go on? Has facebook been taunting you with pictures of overseas adventures you were living this time last year? I'm SO EXCITED to tell you my 4TH CLASS is now live! In Portfolio Builder: Flatlay Fun I break down the steps to create a flatlay illustration inspired by your fave ADVENTURE. It can be an adventure you plan to go on, once the borders are open and we can travel again, or a holiday you took last year. Drawing little icons is heaps on fun!

Happy Holidays and Happy Painting! Hey! I wanted to share my fresh prints! I recently completed this series after starting the first one as a class demo. This is my first series of work combining watercolour and gouache together. It was a big learning curve and I really enjoyed being a stylist - decorating each room and deciding on a colour scheme for each one. Which one is your favourite? These illustrations are now available as A4 prints and as a 4-pack of greeting cards in my Etsy store next week! Do you take online classes? What's your preferred platform?
If you're interested in learning how to paint you own boho bungalow, or about using gouache and watercolour together, check out my Skillshare class! You can sign up for 2 free months and watch a load of classes for free.
My 'Level Up Your Watercolours - Master Layers' class is up on Skillshare. I'm really excited about this one because it is designed for beginners to help students master the fundamental skill of watercolouring: Layers!
It is the key skill to building depth, and adding detail and definition to your watercolour illustrations. From my experience teaching classes in person, this is the concept that is foreign to many students. So I've created a class that builds, lesson by lesson, to help you master complex layering. For the final project we paint a sea turtle. In the class I cover: transparency, glazing, order of layers, mixing washes, negative painting, and complex layering and loads more. Check out the preview here:
My class is hosted by Skillshare. If you haven't heard of the platform before, it is an online learning community with thousands of classes available for free to subscribers. You can sign up below and get 2 months' free membership. A great way to watch classes for free and try before you commit to any payments.
https://www.skillshare.com/r/user/hannahkatarski Let me know what you think! I am excited to announce the launch of my Spring workshop series! I have four new workshops running from my home studio in Melville, Western Australia. Take one class or all four and kick-start your watercolour journey. These classes are aimed at beginners and dabblers. All materials are supplied and classes are limited to ten adults. Learn how to paint gorgeous soft roses and arrange them in a bouquet or wreath with a range of leaves and filler flowers. We'll cover wet-in-wet painting and simple layering which you will be able to replicate at home on greeting cards and other projects. This popular class is back! We pack so much into this class to equip you for your next adventure. The workshop covers travelling light with journalling materials, layout ideas to add interest, ways to incorporate text and images, and when and where to journal. Mixing colours can be a real challenge and can make painting frustrating. In this hands on workshop we cover basic colour theory in a practical way and get you well on the way to mixing cohesive colour schemes and accurate colours. You'll be so inspired and colour-confident after completing this class! Want to give the gift of handmade this Christmas? We'll cover some easy techniques you can use to paint a swag of Christmas cards. I'll teach you ink and wash, wet in wet, layering techniques and some clever ways to replicate your design to save time. Excited? Check out dates and more here.
Join me and learn how to combine watercolour and gouache to illustrate an opulent bohemian bungalow!
Gouache is a versatile, water-based medium that has enjoyed a recent resurgence in popularity. It has a lovely opaque, velvety quality and is perfect for augmenting your watercolour paintings. I created this class because I used to find gouache kind of mysterious. I loved the look it produced, but what was it? And how do you use it? Plus, I had heaps of watercolours, so I didn’t want to go out and buy a whole new range of paints… So I came up with 3 techniques that will give you the confidence to paint with gouache AND seamlessly combine gouache and watercolour in your artwork!
This class is for beginner painters through to experienced watercolourists who are new to gouache and want to expand their portfolio. You will add a range of techniques to your quiver and learn to plan your painting with confidence!
You’ll start to look at your paints in a whole new way! I’ll teach you a range of techniques before we embark on our final project where we put it all together! The lessons will cover:
I have scheduled four workshops over the coming months. Two classes will take place at my home studio in Melville, the other two will take place at Workshop Freo in Fremantle. All the details are on my Classes page.
I'm excited to announcing my FIRST PRINTMAKING CLASS! I'll be teaching a lino carving and printing class with Workshop Freo in September. We'll be using monstera leaves as our inspiration. And if you just can't get enough of tropical plants, I'm also teaching a watercolour tropical foliage class too!!
Check out my classes page for these and other upcoming classes. Howdy! My next class is coming up real soon. Next weekend in fact! I'm looking forward to a morning filled with techniques to document your next holiday and fill that journal with colour. Resist techniques. Mixed media. Travelling light. I can't wait. If only I had a cool holiday of my own coming up! My last class for this season will cover lovely, vibrant wet-in-wet techniques. Galaxies and crystals, oh my! April 7, and after that I hope to be spending my weekend surfing!
Interested? Head to my classes page for all the details. I hope to see you for some colour and a cuppa. I am so excited to announce that my February watercolour class has sold out. Thank you for your support. I can't wait to meet you, if you've signed up.
'Picture Perfect' will run on Saturday 18 March and will also be a beach-themed class, so fear not if you missed out on February. Read more here. |
